Tribal Partner Retreat

The concept for a CRCAIH Tribal Partner Retreat originated in 2016 during conversations between the Community Engagement and Innovation Division and Tribal Partners. The objective for the Retreat was to provide a face-to-face meeting where liaisons from each Tribal Partner could connect to:

  • Share expertise and learn from each other
  • Get feedback on questions they have or challenges they may be facing
  • Identify ways they can serve as resources for each other
  • Foster their connections and plan for the future

March 25-26, 2019  |  Prior Lake, MN

The 4th Tribal Partner Retreat was held at Mystic Lake Casino and Hotel. In attendance were 16 staff from CEID, RKC, Admin, CSBC, and all 5 tribal partners, including supervisors (e.g. health administrators, education directors). Having supervisors and liaisons present provided for rich discussion and planning. Discussion topics included the Data Management Toolkit updates, strategic planning for scope of work tasks, overview of Axiom Mentor, and future planning for the partnership. The tribal partners expressed interest in meeting with Sanford Research Leadership explore the future relationship between Sanford and tribes.

June 26-27, 2018  |  Pierre, SD

The 3rd Tribal Partner Retreat was held again in Pierre, SD, with Melissa Buffalo of CEID leading the coordination. This time, staff representing all 5 CRCAIH Cores and Divisions were able to join the meeting with 4 CRCAIH Tribal Partners. Two summer interns with the Summer Undergraduate Research Experience (SURE) program also attended. After introductions and an overview for newer staff, discussions focused on data management, strategic planning for Year 7, and evaluation, including an engaging River of Life group activity. It was a good opportunity to discuss what everyone wanted accomplish in the upcoming grant year as well as plan for the future.

October 4, 2016  |  Pierre, SD

The 1st Tribal Partner Retreat was coordinated by the Community Engagement and Innovation Division (CEID). The retreat began with introductions and a prayer. Attendees were then given the opportunity to choose from a list of 9 topics to discuss. The topics they chose focused on (1) building relationships with your tribal college and Tribal Council, (2) time management and setting priorities and (3) professional development. CEID provided various handouts useful in community engagement and relationship building. CEID also discussed a tribal partner perspective manuscript and next steps.
