Genetics and Genomics:
This is an Act passed in 2008 that was created to protect Americans from discrimination based on
their genetic information both in health insurance and in employment.

Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA):
The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), Public Law 104-191, was passed
in 1996. The Act provides standards for the protection and confidential handing of protected
health information. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services published various
additional regulations, which they refer to as ‘Administrative Simplification Regulations’ which
were incorporated into HIPAA. These include the ‘HIPAA Privacy Rule’ and the ‘HIPAA Security
Rule’, which must be followed by researchers.
